Hi John,
Last Thursday, June 17, Congress introduced an important bill to break down barriers for LGBTQ+ young people and advance equity in K-12 learning communities. Can we count on you to ask your Congress-people to support decriminalizing youth and schools?
The Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act (CNC) directs federal funds away from school-based law enforcement and towards in-school counseling and health services. The research is clear: criminalizing students does not make schools safer and exacerbates inequities for historically marginalized students, including LGBTQ+ young people, particularly those who are BIPOC or people with disabilities. Let’s send our federal dollars to evidence-based practices and trauma-informed school staff who can support LGBTQ+ young people and foster positive school climates! Schools should be liberated and liberating learning communities for all young people. With your support, we’ll be one step closer to ensuring LGBTQ+ young people are affirmed and have the supports they need to thrive and reach their full potential.
In solidarity,
