Get the Support You Need at Coalitions Rising As someone working in prevention, you know your job. You know about the importance of using evidence-based practices that are informed by theory and proven by evidence. And you know that it’s important to stay up to date on the latest practices, strategies, data, and resources. But staying up to date is hard. Prevention is an ever-evolving field, and where to go for reliable information changes. More than 160 prevention practices have been added to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Evidence-Based Practices Resource Center, which itself was just created in April 2018. Keeping abreast of the latest in prevention theory is challenging. That’s why we at Prevention Action Alliance, with support from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, are hosting the third Coalitions Rising—to connect preventionists like you to the information you need and empower you with the tools and resources you need to do your job to the best of your abilities. Join us in Columbus, Ohio, on December 4, 2019, for a day full of learning, sharing, networking, and skill building. Register today for Coalitions Rising on Eventbrite. We will apply for Continuing Education from the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board, the Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, and the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. And if you join us for Coalitions Rising, you’ll also receive a discount code for $25 off of your registration for the Prevention Action & Advocacy Summit on Vaping. SPCA members can receive a $25 discount on registration to both Coalitions Rising and the Prevention Action & Advocacy Summit. Email us to gain access to that code. Register for Coalitions Rising Exhibitor Space Available at Coalitions Rising Prevention is an ever-changing field with new developments and practices emerging regularly. Over time, new substances emerge that must be contended with, community norms evolve and affect risk and protective factors, old grants dry up and new ones are created, and evidence-based practices emerge. As practitioners in prevention, it can be difficult to stay on top of these changes and to incorporate them into your efforts. Everyone has a role in prevention, and exhibitors support the vital work we do at Prevention Action Alliance by providing resources and tools for all. Together, we help communities, schools, prevention workers, teens, and parents by giving them the strategies and resources they need to prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco, opioids, or other drugs by young people. We lead healthy communities in the prevention of substance misuse and the promotion of mental health wellness. Exhibiting at Coalitions Rising supports the dozens of Ohio and other states' coalitions that look to it for up-to-date information about prevention. As such, it's the perfect opportunity to share information, tools, and other resources dedicated to prevention. Download Exhibitor Form Register Now for OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts Registration is now open for OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts on Thursday, November 7 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Matthew B. Schoonover Educational Center at Prevention Action Alliance. In this training, you will learn to: Understand the impact of stereotypes and biased statements, even when casually said. Identify the most common reasons people sit silent in the face of bias and stereotypes. Enhance skills for speaking up against stereotypes without blame or guilt. Why is this training important? Staying silent in the face of demeaning comments, stereotypes or bias allows these attitudes and behaviors to thrive. This undermines our ability to create an inclusive workplace where all employees are welcomed, treated with respect and able to do their best work. Yet, most employees and leaders who want to speak up don’t know how. So, we say nothing. In a unique and powerful way, viewers will experience the impact of stereotypical comments, explore why people don’t speak up against stereotypes and other biased behaviors, and learn six techniques for speaking up without blame or guilt. We will apply for three hours of Continuing Education in the cultural competency domain. Register Now Get Support for Red Ribbon Week Red Ribbon Week is October 23-31, and this year’s theme is “Send a Message. Their goal is to raise awareness and implement positive messaging strategies to youth. If you need free red ribbons, a pledge banner, presenter, or other support, email Sean Oziegbe at [email protected] with the quantity, deadline, and any other details by using the request form. They’re a large business, a place of learning and scholarship, and a crown jewel of their community. Yet, relationships between campus leaders and town officials can often strain from the interactions between campus and community. Some campuses often don’t even know what their standing is in the community. The Ohio College Initiative to Enhance Student Wellness is excited to announce the Environmental Assessment and Prevention Planning Project! This project helps campuses like yours reduce alcohol misuse among your student body by developing and enhancing environmental prevention efforts in hand with your host community. Through this project, the Ohio College Initiative will underwrite the cost for up to five campuses to complete the Optimal College Town Assessment, which measures how campus and community members view each other. Instead of relying on gut feelings or estimations, the OCTA quantifies and characterizes the relationship and provides actionable steps for improving town-gown relations. Participating campuses will have access to all data collected and will receive technical assistance from Prevention Action Alliance in using that data to develop an environmental prevention plan. Is your town-gown relationship harmonious? Traditional? Conflicted? Or devitalized? Find out by applying for this grant opportunity from the Ohio College Initiative.
