Dear ,
When Dianne launched this campaign in the summer of 2019, no one expected her to get this far — but our candidate and the scrappy team fighting alongside her have defied expectations at every turn, consistently surprising the media, establishment politicians and corporate interests with the power of this movement we’ve built together with the People of New York.
As you’ll know by now, Dianne isn’t a career politician. She’s spent her life as an executive of human service organizations, helping working-class families move out of poverty. She’s also a first-generation Puerto Rican born to a working-class family and the single mother of two young adults; one of whom struggles with mental health challenges, and the other who was assaulted by the NYPD just last year. She’s lived the inequities in our city’s policing and in our education, health and mental health systems.
When Dianne decided to run for mayor, it wasn’t for the title. It was because her combination of lived and professional experience felt uniquely suited to this moment in our city’s history — and City Hall was where she could have the greatest impact for the largest number of people in the communities she’s served all her life.
And this campaign has certainly had an impact.
The polls aren’t closed yet, but regardless of what we find out over the coming weeks, know this: We have changed the face of New York City politics for the better. We have opened the door to a more just and equitable city where no one goes unhoused or without care. Where everyone lives in dignity. Other candidates in this race have adopted more progressive, humane policy positions as a result of Dianne’s candidacy, and a generation of young voters have been inspired to get involved in their communities and to fight for a New York that works for all of us.
To our supporters right here in New York and around the country, thank you — for joining this movement, for speaking up when it might have been easier to be silent, for showing with your voices and your votes (and even with your sneakers!) that when we work together, we can effect lasting, positive change within our communities.
We just have to be willing to fight for it.
In solidarity,
