friend, Right now the Senate is taking a vote on the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S 1), a sprawling voting rights and and government ethics bill. In addition to protecting and expanding voting rights and election security, the For the People Act will reduce the influence of big money in our politics. Unfortunately, this bill may not pass because of dark money influence! West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin (D) has been very vocal about voting against the For the People Act, as well as being opposed to filibuster reform. The reason he is so against legislation that could create a more open and just democracy? He's being pressured by the Koch network. The Koch-funded policy group Americans for Prosperity created a website, video series, and ads, all targeted at Joe Manchin, lobbying him to oppose the For the People Act, along with other aspects of the Democratic agenda. Manchin has since gone on record to defend the Koch network, essentially telling his constituents --and the nation-- that he is willing to place the interests of corporations over those of the common good. Join us in writing to Senator Manchin to tell him what we know to be true: the Koch network is not a friend to democracy. Manchin needs to listen to the people, not corporations. Let him know that you will not allow the Koch network to bully their way into continuing to capture our schools, courts, and politicians with their dark money. The For the People Act will help put the people back in charge of our democracy and it must be passed with no corporate interference. In Solidarity, Jasmine Banks, Executive Director |
