Campbell: "We have to stop the open-ended nature of the asylum category, just as we have for other categories of immigrants."

Former Congressman Tom Campbell (R-CA) recently wrote an op-ed about the U.S. asylum rules and how Congress needs to make them clearer for each administration to follow:

"Congress should reassert its responsibility of deciding how many immigrants our country wants to admit overall, rather than allowing different administrations to twist the meaning of "particular social group" so that immigrants can be made to fit into or be excluded from that limitless category."

The Biden administration recently expanded asylum eligibility to victims of domestic or gang violence - a change that could make hundreds of millions of people around the world eligible for asylum in the U.S. - precisely the kind of "pull factor" that created the current border crisis and could turbocharge it in the future.
