Dear John,
A new systematic review compares Medicare Advantage with traditional
Medicare
Comparing Medicare Advantage And Traditional Medicare
In the June issue, Rajender Agarwal and coauthors conducted a systematic
review of forty-eight studies
comparing Medicare Advantage with traditional Medicare.
Compared with traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage was associated
with "higher use of preventive care visits, fewer hospital admissions,
fewer emergency department visits, shorter hospital and skilled nursing
facility lengths-of-stay, and lower health care spending."
However, the authors also found readmission rates, mortality, experience
of care, and disparities by race and ethnicity did not show better
performance in Medicare Advantage plans, despite their receipt of higher
payments.
On today's A Health Podyssey, Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil interviews
Stacie Dusetzina and Michal Horný
on out-of-pocket health care spending.
Today on Health Affairs Blog, Katie Keith discusses the recent Supreme
Court decision
regarding unpaid cost-sharing reduction payments.
Also, Deborah Steinberg and coauthors discuss gaps in Medicare's
coverage for substance use disorder
treatment
that leave behind beneficiaries who need intermediate levels of care.
Elevating Voices: Pride Month: In a 2017 Health Affairs Blog post,
Landon Hughes and Heather Pearson advocate for adapting health care
quality measures
to
meet the needs of transgender people.
