Law Enforcement News Janitor Stabbed To Death By Tenant's Boyfriend At Mid-Wilshire Apartment Complex A memorial is growing for a janitor who was killed while on the job at a Mid-Wilshire area apartment complex. Last Wednesday, Jose Tomas Mejia was working at the apartment complex in the 6200 block of West 3rd Street. Mejia was believed to be stabbed by a tenant's boyfriend during a struggle over keys. "He was stabbed to death while preventing an intruder from entering the apartment building where he was working," organizers wrote on a GoFundMe set up to help Mejia's grieving family cover funeral and burial expenses. "He died as he lived, as a protector and hero." The tenant's boyfriend, identified as a 17-year-old, was arrested in connection to the deadly stabbing. Mejia is survived by his wife and children. FOX 11 Woman Wounded In Vermont Knolls Shooting A woman was hospitalized Sunday morning after she was shot by a man in the Vermont Knolls area of Los Angeles. The shooting occurred at 12:45 a.m. at 83rd and Figueroa streets, according to Lt. Angela McGee of the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Station. The woman was taken by paramedics to Harbor UCLA Medical Center where she had stable vital signs, McGee said. The man suspected of shooting her remained at large, she said. It happened at the Whole Foods parking lot around 8:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim, a male in his 40's, was taken to a nearby hospital, according to police. The suspect was taken into custody. Police say the victim was not being cooperative. Both the suspect and the victim are persons experiencing homelessness. No further details are available at this time. Venice Current Nude Man Caught On Camera Breaking Into Bel Air Home, Killing Pet Birds Pleads Not Guilty A man who was caught on video breaking into a Bel Air home and killing two family pets was charged Monday with four felony counts, officials announced. Paul Kiyan, 34, from the Los Angeles area, faces one count of first-degree residential burglary with a person present, one count of vandalism and two counts of cruelty to an animal, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. He pleaded not guilty Monday to all counts. Kiyan is accused of gaining entry on June 17 into a home on Casiano Road, while owner Mat Sabz was inside. Sabz says his wife Monica called and said she saw someone inside their home on the security cameras. Kiyan, who could be seen on the home’s Ring camera footage walking around the couple’s backyard while naked, entered the home and helped himself to a shower and a pair of shorts. Sabz confronted him, but Kiyan kept claiming the house was his and saying he would call the police. Sabz then locked himself in the master bedroom and proceeded to jump off the balcony to get outside, and he called police. KTLA 5 Burglary Suspect Arrested After Barricading Himself In Hummer In Studio City A possible burglary suspect was taken into custody after barricading himself in a Hummer for several hours in a Studio City neighborhood Tuesday morning, prompting a SWAT standoff that forced nearby evacuations. The incident began at 2:30 a.m. when Los Angeles police were called to a report of a prowler in the area of Valleyheart Drive and Coldwater Canyon Avenue, less than a block off Ventura Boulevard. Officers arrived to find a woman with cuts and bruises she had suffered during an apparent burglary. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It’s unclear exactly how she was injured. Police said officers then discovered the suspect barricaded inside a 2006 Hummer. It’s unclear if he was armed. Surrounding apartments and condos were evacuated. Police were unsure if the suspect owned the vehicle. At one point, officers used a loudspeaker, threatening to call in K-9 units. The man was taken into custody a little after 6 a.m. His name and the charges he may face were not confirmed. CBS 2 Chiefs Star Frank Clark Arrested In South LA After Gun Found In Car Kansas City Chiefs player Frank Clark was arrested Sunday during a traffic stop in South Los Angeles for allegedly possessing a concealed weapon. Los Angeles Police Department officers pulled the 28-year-old Clark over for an unspecified vehicle violation at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday near Grand Avenue and Adams Boulevard, according to LAPD Officer Mike Lopez. Officers arrested Clark and his three passengers after they saw a bag with a submachine gun sticking out of it in the car, Lopez said. Clark was booked into the L.A. County jail and released Monday afternoon on $35,000 bond. The names of Clark’s passengers were not released and it was not clear if they face charges. CBS 2 Driver In Custody After Chase Through San Fernando Valley That Ended In Standoff A driver that led police on a lengthy chase through the San Fernando Valley before barricading himself inside a possibly stolen Audi was taken into custody Monday night. Multiple LAPD units followed the vehicle from the Arleta area over surface streets and then south down the 5 Freeway until the driver exited at Alameda Avenue in the Burbank area. The driver continued to drive over surface streets in the Burbank area, stopping for lights and mostly following speed limits. At one point a male passenger exited the vehicle and surrendered, but the black Audi then kept driving. At another point, the Audi entered a cul-de-sac with at least three units behind, but the officer did not make any attempt to block the vehicle in. The car circled around the cul-de-sac and then drove past the police units to continue the chase. ABC 7 $12.7 Million In Counterfeit Pills, Handbags, Shoes, And Sunglasses Seized At LA-Long Beach Ports Area More than 47,000 counterfeit Cialis pills and 10,117 fake pieces of designer clothing and footwear – with an estimated value of $12.7 million-plus – were seized at the Los Angeles-Long Beach ports area, officials announced Monday, June 21. The clothing items bore Christian Dior, Versace, Gucci, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Nike Air and Swoosh designs and was part of a shipment from China, said Jaime Ruiz, a spokesman for U.S Customs and Border Protection. The haul included handbags, shoes and sunglasses. The merchandise’s estimated value is based on suggested retail prices by the manufacturers, Ruiz said. Border Protection officers and U.S. Homeland Security investigators seized the items and turned them over to the Los Angeles Police Department for further investigation, Ruiz said. Further details, including when the seizure took place and how officials were tipped to the counterfeit items, were not been disclosed. Neither was whether any arrests were made. Los Angeles Daily News Man Shot To Death In Compton Intersection A man was shot to death Monday in a Compton intersection. The shooting was reported around midnight at Linsley Street and White Avenue, said Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Arriving deputies found the victim suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper body, Koerner said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. Sheriff’s homicide detectives went to the scene to look for witnesses and evidence, Koerner said. No further information was immediately available. Hawkins is Black, 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 185 pound, with brown eyes, black hair and a black beard. He was last seen wearing a red short sleeve shirt and brown shorts. The CHP and the Orange County District Attorney asked the public this week to call or email with information about any previously unreported confrontations involving a couple now charged in connection with the murder of Aiden Leos, who was shot to death while riding in the back seat of his mother’s car on the 55 Freeway. “We want to know about those sorts of incidents,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said Monday. “They could be very relevant to our investigation, both to help us understand what happened on May 21st, the day that Aiden Leos lost his life, as well as what they were doing after the event.” NBC 4 Colorado Officer Killed In Denver-Area Shooting ID'd; 2 Others Dead A gunman is believed to have shot and killed an officer and another person in a shopping district in a Denver suburb Monday before being fatally shot by police, authorities said. An officer responded to a call at 1:15 p.m. about a suspicious incident near the library in the city of Arvada, and about 15 minutes later, a 911 call came in about shots fired and the officer hit, Deputy Chief Ed Brady said at a news conference. The officer who was killed has been identified as Gordon Beesley, a 19-year Arvada department veteran, police said later Monday, according to The Denver Post. Another person believed to have been shot by the gunman was taken to a hospital and died, police said. The attacker also was shot and killed. Authorities didn't immediately describe the circumstances of the shooting but said no one else is believed to have been involved. Associated Press Public Safety News Body Washes Ashore In San Pedro Days After Man Falls Off Catalina Express Eleven days after a man went overboard a Catalina Island passenger ship traveling from Long Beach to Santa Catalina Island, officials said a body washed ashore off the coast of San Pedro on Monday afternoon. On June 10, emergency crews responded to a jet incident south of the Port of Long Beach around 6 p.m. According to Relevance PR, the public relations firm representing Catalina Express, the boat's captain was alerted about a man who fell off the boat about three miles off the Long Beach backwater. The vessel turned around to search for the man, along with members of the U.S. Coast Guard, Bay Watch and the Long Beach Fire Department, an official said in a press release. Following the tragic incident, the vessel returned to Long Beach where the remaining passengers boarded a different Catalina Express vessel and transported them to the original destination in Avalon. FOX 11 8 People Hurt In 3-Car Wreck In Van Nuys, Firefighters Say Emergency crews are responding to a horrific 3-car wreck in Van Nuys Monday night. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call of a crash in the 7400 block of Van Nuys Boulevard a little after 8:15 p.m. Firefighters say a total of eight people, one of them a pedestrian, were hurt in the crash. LAFD initially reported 10 people hurt but later said two people turned down chances to be taken to the hospital. Officials say six of the eight people hurt in the crash were taken to the hospital. All patients are expected to eventually recover. FOX 11 Black, Latino Residents Seeing Less Progress In COVID Case Rates Than Whites In L.A. County In a sobering sign of the unequal health outcomes of the pandemic, coronavirus case rates are improving at a slower pace for Black and Latino residents of Los Angeles County than for white and Asian American residents. When calculated over a two-week period, coronavirus case rates for Black residents dropped by 13% over the past month and by 22% for Latino residents, while falling by 33% for white and 45% for Asian American residents. And while hospitalization rates have fallen by 11% over the same time period for Black residents, they dropped by 34% for Latinos and whites and 50% for Asian Americans. “As the weeks pass, we are seeing significant decreases — which is great in our overall rates — but they also are not distributed equally among racial and ethnic groups in our county,” L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said. KTLA 5 Delta Coronavirus Strain Is Growing Fast In California, With Risk For Unvaccinated People The highly infectious delta coronavirus variant is rising fast in California, with cases more than doubling in the past month and tripling in one Bay Area county, according to genomic sequencing results reported by state and local public health departments. The first California cases of delta, a variant that emerged in India, were reported in early May. As of last week, 349 cases had been identified, and the variant made up about 5% of all coronavirus cases that underwent genomic sequencing for the week. The alpha variant, first identified in the United Kingdom, continues to dominate statewide, making up just over half of all cases reported last week. In the United States, the delta variant makes up roughly 10% of all cases that have been sequenced, according to federal authorities. Some models predict it will become the dominant strain by the end of the summer. The delta variant is more infectious than alpha, and may be twice as transmissible as the original strain of the coronavirus from Wuhan, China, according to preliminary studies.
