As you know, the RePower L.A. coalition has been hard at work fighting to erase utility debt at the city and state levels. This week, we won 2 billion dollars in the California budget, one billion for water debt, and one billion for energy debt. This is a big victory for the families who have been struggling to pay down their utility debt.
During our Lights On, Water Flowing, emergency utility debt teach-in, SCOPE, CBE, and Pacoima Beautiful members were generous in sharing their struggles with utility debt. It is because of that vulnerable storytelling that these wins were possible. We are so grateful to everyone who has been involved in our campaign.
We also owe this victory to our champions in the California Legislature, especially Senator Maria Elena Durazo. Thank you, Senator Durazo, for your continued support.
But the fight at the state is not over. We now must turn our attention to ensuring those funds are distributed as fairly and quickly as possible. It is imperative that there must not be burdensome applications for customers to get relief. We will also continue to fight to extend shutoff protections and address long-term utility affordability.
Here in Los Angeles, we are working with the LA City Council and LADWP to ensure we maximize federal and state relief dollars to ensure erasing utility debt for LA residents.
