Hello,
In 1965, my friend John Lewis marched along the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama to advocate for the right to vote. Now, 56 years later, this march isn't over. In fact, we need to be marching for the right to vote more than ever.
In 2021 alone, more than 385 new laws have been proposed in 48 states to limit mail-in voting, early in-person and Election Day voting. Republican leaders in some states are spreading unfounded conspiracy theories about mail-in voting, while others pass modern-day poll taxes. The right to vote is under attack.
While some of my Republican colleagues may claim these measures are a good idea, none of them pass my "grandma's test."
Let me explain, friend: my grandma became a citizen when she was 87 years old and was an active voter until she passed away 22 years later. How would the voting laws we're seeing states pass impact my grandma?
Voter ID laws would have forced my grandma to pay for an ID card -- in our state that costs $54. In other words, my grandma would have to pay a "poll tax" to vote. Proposals that would limit polling places and end early voting would force my grandma to wait in line for hours. At the age of 90+, this wouldn't be possible.
These new laws wouldn't work for my grandma, and they especially won't work for communities of color across our country. According to the Brennan Center, they will disproportionately harm Black voters.
Congress must act before any more of these voter suppression laws are enacted.
That's just what HR 1 -- the For The People Act -- would do. I was proud to vote in favor of this bill when it passed the House earlier this year, and now we need the Senate to pass this legislation when they hold a vote later TODAY.
We need to make our voices heard now more than ever. If you support protecting the right to vote, add your name to demand the Senate pass HR 1. The Senate needs to hear from you today, friend.

And after we've made HR 1 the law of the land, we need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This would restore the integrity of the original Voting Rights Act -- which John Lewis fought so hard to secure.
It's an honor to represent you,
Derek
