Dear MoveOn member,
Time is running out to protect our democracy from Republican attacks. This is why our senators need to act on this once-in-a-generation chance by swiftly passing the For the People Act, a transformative bill that will fundamentally protect our multiracial democracy and voting rights, that is coming up for a vote in the Senate tomorrow.
Will you watch and share this short video about why senators must pass the For the People Act to protect our democracy to ensure our senators see that we expect them to vote yes tomorrow? Don't forget to follow the instructions and call your senator, too!

The Republicans have been on a tear to attack our democracy. The world watched in horror after the GOP Treason Caucus incited a deadly insurrection led by white supremacist Trump supporters on January 6. We watched in horror while they voted to object to the results of the 2020 election despite the insurrection, as they refused to hold Trump accountable in the impeachment trials (twice), and while they used the filibuster, a tool invented by racist, pro-slavery senators before the Civil War that prevented the passage of over 200 anti-lynching bills, to block a bipartisan commission to investigate the insurrection.
It never ends. Republicans, fueled by special interests and dark money, continue to escalate their attacks on democracy. The latest? They’ve introduced almost 400 voter suppression bills in 48 statehouses this year.1 The scary part? They’re succeeding in states like Georgia, where people, predominantly Black people and communities of color, already face huge, intentional hurdles to voting, such as long lines, difficult voter registration processes, and limited access to early voting and mail-in ballots.
That's why passing the For the People Act is so important. Passing this bill means that every single state will have automatic voter registration, that every voter has 15 consecutive days of early voting to cast their ballot, that everyone can vote by mail, and that returning citizens get their voting rights restored. It would also put an end to partisan gerrymandering and curb the power of big money by creating a public financing system so that candidates can fuel their campaigns from grassroots donations instead of becoming indebted to big corporations and the mega-rich.
Passing the For the People Act is a racial justice issue.
Time and time again, the Republican Party has shown us that they are hellbent on adding barriers to the ballot box that are designed to negatively impact Black people and communities of color. Republicans have used gerrymandering to marginalize communities of color, to diminish the political influence of Black and brown voters, and to protect corrupt incumbents from competition. And it’s no surprise that dark money from corporations and the ultra-wealthy have also kept diverse candidates who are truly representative of their communities off the ballot.
And Mitch McConnell has said he's "100% focused on stopping President Biden's agenda."2 There is absolutely no time to wait to find bipartisanship with the same Republican Party that enables attacks on our democracy while refusing to work with Democrats to pass legislation that would actually help our communities, especially those who have been consistently pushed to the margins.
Just imagine what our democracy would look like if no one had to jump through all of these unnecessary, intentional hurdles to cast their ballot. We could truly have an inclusive, multiracial democracy that works for all of us. For these reasons and many more, we need our senators to meet this moment with urgency by passing the For the People Act.
Thanks for all you do.
