Hi Friend,
The federal government still insists on treating drug use and addiction as a criminal matter. The reality is, addiction is a health issue and criminalization is a key contributor to opioid-related deaths.
Opioid-related deaths are at record highs, with 18 people dying each day in Canada. People need care, not punishment or incarceration.
This is why the Green Party has called for the government to decriminalize the possession of illicit drugs, and to create a national safe supply program.
Speak out!
Guided by the consensus among leading public health officials, Greens have called for possession of illicit drugs to be decriminalized no later than this upcoming Canada Day, July 1.
The avoidable loss of life has been made worse by the pandemic. The current approach of criminalizing drug use creates stigma and this must end if we want to end the opioid epidemic.
