Week of June 21, 2021

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Branch Meetings: Saturday, June 26 @ 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Join us as we host synchronous branch meetings all across LA county in order to learn from each other and discuss current campaigns, strategies, and opportunities to get involved.

This month’s meetings are going to be focused on learning about and providing room for feedback on the chapter’s “Democratic Socialist Program.”

The Program is collection of policies that express our local priorities. It will be used to help us build unity across the chapter, and also provide clarity and accountability for elected officials or candidates who are seeking our endorsement. Not every branch in our chapter deals with the exact same situations or conditions, so we want to make sure that members from every branch have the opportunity.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. Register using the link to your branch. [Links coming soon!] (Not sure which branch you’re a part of? Check the list here!)
  2. After registration, you will be sent a Zoom link. Please join a few minutes early so we can start on time!
  3. The first portion of the meeting will be an interactive live stream shared across all 5 branches
  4. Then, all branches will work through an agenda prepared by their coordinators to highlight branch projects and create room for discussion about branch strategies and how to get involved.

Take a stand against unfair labor practices, sexual harassment, and discrimination at the Chateau Marmont by supporting the workers who support Hollywood!

After this action, we’ll be heading out for a little Champagne Socialism: Hollywood Labor’s Leftist Hollywood Drinks Night! Come by for a night of drinks, venting, and political education as we brainstorm how we can make Hollywood work for its workers. All are welcome – you don’t need to be a DSA-LA member to attend. (That said, you should become a DSA-LA member!)

West Hollywood, Pico-Robertson, and Miracle Mile Neighborhood Meeting

Tuesday, June 22 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Neighborhood Meetings are part of DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program—our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study. This and all other West Hollywood, Pico-Robertson, and Miracle Mile Neighborhood Meetings are open to new and long-time comrades (as well as non-members!) who live in West Hollywood, Hollywood Hills West, Miracle Mile, Fairfax, Pico-Robertson, Beverly Crest, Beverly Hills, Beverlywood, Carthay, and Beverly Grove.

Our fourth Neighborhood Meeting will build on discussions and projects outlined in last meeting — including ways to engage with local struggles for housing justice.

Continuing our study of Class Struggle and Socialist Strategy across different terrains, our study topic for this meeting will be Socialist Struggle for Decommodified Goods, with a focus on housing. Short recommended readings to ground the discussion are included below.

If you have questions about whether or not this is your Neighborhood – email us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you right away.

Join the Mutual Aid Skill Share Subcommittee to explore the new options and learn how you can get involved with the fight for single payer healthcare in California!

Locks on My Block on the Westside: Mini Canvass Training + Phonebank

Wednesday, June 23 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

All comrades—but especially Westside comrades in and around Venice—are invited to join this Mini Canvass Training + Phonebank in preparation for the upcoming Locks On My Block Canvass in Venice on June 26th.

AirBnB is an infamous engine for displacement and there is a particularly high density of AirBnB rentals in Venice. NOlympics-LA and the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project have built an organizing tool called LOCKS ON MY BLOCK [nolympicsla.com/locks] to report & track illegal Airbnbs in our city.

This event will train comrades to spot illegal Airbnbs and start conversations with tenants in your neighborhood and organize against these predatory practices. We’ll also be making calls to comrades in Venice to join us in this hyper-local organizing work going forward.

If you’ve never canvassed or phonebanked before, no worries! This virtual hosted event is a great way to get involved in neighborhood organizing work; there will be time dedicated to ensure comrades know what to expect for future irl canvassing and we’ll walk through the phone bank script step-by-step.

Koreatown / Westlake / Mid-Wilshire & Adjacent Neighborhood Meeting

Thursday, June 24 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

New and long-time comrades who live in Koreatown, Westlake, Mid-Wilshire, Fairfax, Larchmont, Hancock Park, and Windsor Square are invited to our third Neighborhood Meeting as part of the DSA-LA Neighborhood Solidarity Program — our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study.

This and all future Neighborhood Meetings will be organized to engage all comrades in the Neighborhood Solidarity Program in tangible ways that build solidarity with our neighbors by:

  • building organizing around rent, habitability, and housing justice issues;
  • addressing immediate needs through mutual aid work (e.g. shared child watch, accessing government benefits, supporting encampments in coordination with Street Watch, etc.); and
  • engaging in regular political study and consciousness-raising.

If you have questions about whether or not this is your neighborhood – email us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you right away.

If you do want to prepare for the meeting in some way, start thinking about what you might need in order to begin building power with your neighbors.

Interpretacion sera disponible en español / Spanish interpretation will be available!

South Bay Neighborhood Meeting

Thursday, June 24 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Neighborhood Meetings are part of DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program—our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study. This and all other South Bay Neighborhood Meetings are open to new and long-time comrades who live in El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Lawndale, Alondra Park, Carson, and West Carson.

Our fourth South Bay Neighborhood Meeting will build on discussions and projects outlined in last meeting — including South Bay-focused power mapping and strategizing tenant organizing work alongside our own neighbors.

Continuing our study of Class Struggle and Socialist Strategy across different terrains, our study topic for this meeting will be Socialist Struggle for Decommodified Goods, with a focus on housing. Short recommended readings to ground the discussion are included below.

NOlympics Locks On My Block Venice Canvass

Saturday, June 26 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

All comrades—but especially Westside comrades in and around Venice—are invited to join this Locks On My Block Training + Canvass. ✊

AirBnB is an infamous engine for displacement and there is a particularly high density of AirBnB & short-term rentals in Venice. New and experienced canvassers are welcome: this canvassing event will provide comrades training on how to spot illegal Airbnbs and start conversations with tenants in your neighborhood to organize against these predatory practices.

This irl event is a great way to get involved in neighborhood organizing work on the Westside and connect with NOlympics—who have collaborated with the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project to built an organizing tool called LOCKS ON MY BLOCK [nolympicsla.com/locks] to report & track illegal Airbnbs in our city.

DSA-LA Child Watch Parent Survey Working Meeting

Sunday, June 27 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The DSA-LA Child Watch program wants to know more about the parents of DSA-LA (and parents not-quite-yet-of DSA-LA!) in order to make sure that our focus and work is most effective. To this end, we are working on a survey to help us better understand where parents are located, and what sorts of things (active or passive) our chapter could do to make organizing more accessible to them and their children.

At this meeting, we will be going over all of the suggestions and feedback we’ve gotten and putting together one final, official survey for distribution.

If you can’t make it to this meeting, or if you’d just like to give feedback in the meantime, please email [email protected] and we can get you early access to it, or answer any other questions that you may have!

Fearless Cities Workshop 4 of 4

In night 4, we’ll discuss pages pgs. 100 thru the end of the book. Here’s our study guide.
