John,

Your state has led the way in taking action on ghost guns—dangerous, untraceable firearms that pose the scariest and fastest growing gun safety threat across the country. But state action is not enough: Only the federal government can end the proliferation of ghost guns altogether.

When ghost guns go unchecked, they allow anyone to make an untraceable weapon in less than an hour. And to make matters worse, they're becoming a weapon of choice for violent criminals, gun traffickers, dangerous extremists, and more generally, people legally prohibited from buying firearms.

The good news is the Biden-Harris administration has put forward a new proposed rule that would end the spread of these dangerous firearms, building off the action that states like yours have already taken. In order for the rule to go into effect, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) needs to hear from you on this proposed rule that would stop the unchecked spread of ghost guns and save lives.

To get you started, here are some examples of comments you can submit. You can use the opening sentence we’ve provided, as well as 1-2 of the bulleted supporting points:

I am writing in support of the ATF's proposed rule that would help stem the rise of unregulated ghost guns.

  • This proposed rule is a win for public safety and a loss for any criminals or extremists who wanted to build untraceable guns with no background check and no questions asked.

  • Anyone can make an untraceable weapon in less than an hour, which makes ghost guns the scariest and fastest-growing gun safety threat in the country.

  • Ghost guns have emerged as a weapon of choice for violent criminals, gun traffickers, dangerous extremists, and other people legally prohibited from buying firearms. ATF's under-regulation of the core components of firearms has made ghost guns the fastest-growing gun safety problem facing our country.
