Friend,
There are immense consequences when we fail to act on the climate crisis. Just take these two pieces of recent news as proof:
- This month we learned that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is the highest it's been in 4 million years.
- Meanwhile, vast swaths of fellow Western states like Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah are in the throes of a catastrophic drought. Already, California's 1,500 reservoirs are holding about half the water they usually do in June.
This is what happens when we fail to address the crisis before us.
Yet, as President Biden has demanded aggressive climate action as part of any infrastructure legislation, a group of senators are now pushing a gutless package, void of any meaningful investments in ending the climate crisis.
We can't accept an infrastructure package that doesn't tackle the climate crisis. Full stop. Add your name next to mine to demand that Congress pass an infrastructure package that includes bold climate action.
Earlier this year, Washington state passed historic legislation to help mitigate the climate crisis. Our Climate Commitment Act creates a cap-and-invest program that limits and reduces greenhouse gas emissions across our economy, while our new Clean Fuel Standard expands the use of electric vehicles and lower-carbon fuels and enacts one of the strongest environmental policies in the nation. Our state is proof positive that you can pass comprehensive climate laws and have one of the country's strongest economies.
But Washington state can't go it alone. To prevent further climate catastrophes (like the ones folks in the American West are already enduring), we need federal action -- fast. President Biden's American Jobs Plan, which proposes aggressive climate policies and federal programs like a Clean Electricity Standard and a Civilian Climate Corps, would be a historic start. Now, we need Congress to pass it.
Sign on today to show there's wide national support for a federal infrastructure package with bold climate action at its heart.
Thank you for raising your voice with me to help end this crisis. Stay safe out there.
Very truly yours,
Jay
