Woman Shot Dead, Two Others Wounded In South LA Drive By
A woman in her mid-50s was shot dead and two other people -- a man and a woman in their 60s -- were wounded during a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles, authorities said Saturday. The shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Friday in the 6500 block of South Vermont Avenue, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the LAPD. The woman in her mid-50s was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name will be released pending notification of next of kin, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Paramedics rushed the other two victims, in stable condition, to an area hospital, Lopez said. A motive for the shooting was not immediately known. Anyone with any information regarding the shooting was urged to call the LAPD's 77th Street Station at 323-786-5075.

Man Fatally Shot In Canoga Park
A man was shot to death in Canoga Park, authorities said Sunday. The shooting was reported at 9:11 p.m. Saturday at 7265 Hatillo Avenue, according to a dispatcher at the LAPD's Operations Center. The 42-year-old victim was shot by another man who fled the scene, the dispatcher said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

Naked Man Breaks Into Bel Air Home, Kills Family Pets
A Bel Air homeowner is in shock after coming face to face with a violent naked man who broke into his house and killed the family pets. Mat Sabz was home alone Thursday afternoon when his wife called to tell him that security cameras showed a naked man breaking into their home. "I see a man downstairs, eye to eye. Immediately I raised my voice and pointed at him saying ‘hey what are you doing’", Sabz told FOX 11. However, that encounter did not stop the naked intruder. "He didn’t leave. He looked at me and said ‘this is my house, what are you doing here’ and before I could say a word he said ‘I’m going to call the police’. And right away I realized that this is not a person that you want to engage with any further," Sabz stated. Mat ran into a room while the intruder went back downstairs and made himself at home; he was even caught swimming in the pool and trying on clothes. The suspect then saw the homeowner’s two parakeets. "First he smiled at them like a serial killer. He put his hands near them, dropped them, and stomped on them. The other bird knew what was going on. You can hear the bird screaming and he did the same thing with the second bird. And that kind of changed everything when we saw that he killed these two defenseless animals."

Homeless Man Killed By Hit-and-Run Driver In Boyle Heights
A 62-year-old homeless man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Boyle Heights, authorities said Monday. The incident was reported at 10:46 p.m. at 1606 S. Grande Vista Ave., according to a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations Center. The pedestrian was crossing the street when he was struck by the vehicle, the officer said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Video showed the scene was near a railroad bridge, and that officers set up a canopy to shield the scene from view.

Man Ordered To Stand Trial In Shooting Of Lady Gaga's Dog Walker
One of three reputed gang members charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Lady Gaga's dog walker and the theft of two of the singer's French bulldogs was ordered Friday to stand trial. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Francis Bennett found sufficient evidence to allow the case against Lafayette Shon Whaley, 27, to proceed to trial, according to Deputy District Attorney Michele Hanisee. Whaley and co-defendants James Howard Jackson, 18, and Jaylin Keyshawn White, 19, were charged April 29 with one count each of attempted murder, second-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the Feb. 24 shooting of Lady Gaga's longtime dog walker, Ryan Fischer. Jackson — the alleged gunman — is also charged with one count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and felon carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, while White is also facing one count of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury. Jackson and White are awaiting a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to allow the case against them to proceed to trial.

LAPD Hosts Baseball Game, Free Community Barbecue Ahead Of Father’s Day In Pacoima
The Los Angeles Police Department hosted a baseball game and free barbecue to celebrate Father’s Day weekend. “We’re giving back to the fathers here in the community,” said LAPD Officer Michael J. Scott. “So our organization, the Los Angeles Police Foundation and the Community Safety Partnership came together with Blinky Rodriguez and we decided to put together a baseball game, barbecue, fun, entertainment, giveaways for the whole family to come out. Everything is free.”

Elderly Venice Boardwalk Performer Attacked Again
A Venice boardwalk entertainer who was knocked unconscious by a homeless man in early June was attacked again on Sunday. It happened at the 500 block of Ocean Front Walk around 1:30 p.m.. An eye witness who was walking by said 70-year-old John Gavert was singing and dancing when a homeless woman nearby started harassing Gavert and then tried to hit him. Gavert took out mace sprayed the woman. Police arrived and took the woman into custody. In early June Gavert was sucker punched by Marco Harger, a homeless man who lives on the Boardwalk. Harger was arrested and booked on suspicion of battery causing serious bodily injury, police said.

Woman Steals LAFD Ambulance, Crashes It Into Pole In North Hills
A woman was at large Friday after stealing a LAFD ambulance and crashing it into a pole. Police say firefighters were responding to a 911 call at Parthenia Street and Columbus Avenue at about 3:25 a.m. when a woman jumped into an ambulance and took off. The ambulance made it just three blocks before slamming into a pole in the 15000 block of Chase Street. The woman took off running, and is still being sought by police. No one was hurt in the incident, and authorities say the ambulance sustained some collision damage. The tires of an LAPD vehicle were also slashed, police said.

Woman, 67, Reported Missing In Woodland Hills
Police continued their search Saturday to locate a missing 67-year-old woman last seen in Woodland Hills. Michal Prager was last seen between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday in the 5600 block of De Soto Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Prager is white. She stands 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Prager was last seen wearing a dark blue-and-yellow shirt and dark blue pants. Caught On Camera: Uber Eats Driver Suspected Of Stealing Beloved Cat While On Delivery Call
A neighbor’s security camera caught the exact moment when an Uber Eats driver, out for a delivery in Studio City, picked up Patrick Lewis’ cat, Hog, placed it in the back of her car, and then walked out of frame with a brown bag. “I’ve actually only watched it one time. I can’t,” Lewis said of the video of his cat being put into the back of the car. Lewis went looking for Hog, who he found 18 years ago in Brooklyn, on Tuesday. Things began to click for Lewis once he started talking to his neighbors. One neighbor said she saw a woman pick Hog up, while another neighbor looked at their security video, and, finally, a third neighbor identified the woman in the video as the person who delivered the food she’d ordered and still had a receipt with the first name of the driver. “…which is the weirdest thing, that she literally…she picks up the cat, throws her in and then drops off a delivery from The Counter upstairs, like just kind of…I don’t know and then just drives off,” Lewis said. “She doesn’t look like a stray. She’s not a…she has a collar.”

California Launches Human Trafficking, Sexual Predator Apprehension Teams
California Attorney General Rob Bonta Friday formally launched new regional Human Trafficking and Sexual Predator Apprehension Teams and is encouraging law enforcement to reach out to the new program. Progressively stepping up their efforts since last year, the teams -- one covering Southern California and another targeting Northern California -- are now nearly fully staffed and have already taken action across the state to support law enforcement partners in disrupting and dismantling human trafficking and the criminal exploitation of children. Bonta also issued a bulletin to local authorities to provide guidance on key techniques meant to help reduce harm in law enforcement interactions with sexually exploited youth. In addition, the AG highlighted new funds included in the proposed state budget aimed at fighting the effects of the pandemic on human trafficking and directly supporting survivors across California through $30 million in new grants over the next three years. The proposed funds are in addition to $10 million per year in grants already included in the budget.

Kansas Officer Shot, Critically Wounded During Welfare Check
One person is dead and an officer is in critical condition after a shooting Saturday night in south Wichita. Officers responded to a welfare check call around 10:15 p.m. in the 500 block of West Carlyle. Two officers arrived at the home where "two females" were when a suspect inside the home started shooting at the officers, Capt. Wendell Nicholson said. An officer was hit multiple times. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The suspect continued shooting as other officers arrived, Nicholson said. The suspect was eventually shot. He died at the scene. "There are multiple witnesses that have been taken up to the sixth floor" where the homicide unit is, he said. Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said in a tweet that the officer remained in critical condition as of about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. "Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers," Ramsay said.

LAFD Responds To 'Suspicious' Van Fire On Sunset
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) is looking into a suspicious vehicle fire that started early Friday morning. Firefighters were called to 900 block of Sunset Avene around 12:30 a.m. Friday, June 18. A 911 call initiated the call for service, according to LAFD. A post on social media said the van is being used by a person experiencing homelessness--and that fireworks were heard from the area before the fire. A fire investigator has been assigned to the case. No further details are available at this time.

LA County Sees Slow But Steady Rise In COVID-19 Delta Variant Cases
Los Angeles County reported 255 new cases of COVID-19 and nine additional deaths Saturday, while continuing to track the proliferation of coronavirus variants. Saturday's figures brought the county's totals to 1,247,361 cases and 24,439 fatalities since the pandemic began, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. According to state figures, there were 219 people hospitalized in the county due to COVID-19 as of Saturday, the same as Friday. There were 38 COVID patients in intensive care, down from 43 the previous day. Of particular interest to health officials is the Delta variant, formerly known as the Indian variant. That and related Kappa variants are involved in massive outbreaks in India, in the recent surge of cases in the U.K., and in ongoing outbreaks elsewhere worldwide. It appears the Delta variant is highly transmissible, and more contagious even than other highly contagious COVID variants.

L.A. County’s Coronavirus Death Rate Falls Below That Of Bay Area In Another Sign Of Dramatic Recovery
For much of the pandemic, the San Francisco Bay Area managed to limit the spread of the coronavirus far more dramatically than Los Angeles County, which ended up as one of the nation’s hardest-hit regions. But in a sign of its dramatic recovery, L.A. County reported about two COVID-19 deaths a day over the past week, down from a peak of 241 in January. By comparison, the Bay Area — comprising Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma counties — is reporting four deaths a day, down from a peak of 63. L.A. County has a population of 10 million; the Bay Area has 7.7 million. This is just one more piece of evidence about how the course of COVID-19 has changed in California, and why officials are confident that the state faces little risk of the surges that repeatedly shut down large swaths of the economy over the past 15 months.
