I’m so proud of our progress – and more motivated than ever to keep fighting for LGBTQ+ equality in the face of new attacks.
Friend, it’s Attorney General Maura Healey here, wishing you a Happy Pride Month! As the country’s first openly gay Attorney General, the issue of equality is deeply personal for me.
In the past ten years, I’ve seen hope bloom everywhere, even in the most unlikely of places. The progress we’ve made – in our courts, our schools, our workplaces, our healthcare system – has saved countless lives. Built families. Protected livelihoods.
From the steps of the Supreme Court to the loving households dotting the country – we have overcome so much, and we are winning. Our right to exist as freely and boldly and unquestionably as we want is recognized in more and more places. I am thrilled, grateful, and motivated to keep fighting.
But the enemies of progress have been just as busy, Friend. Last month, the ACLU declared 2021 the worst year for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in modern history, with radical state legislatures introducing a record number of hateful bills – and it’s only June.
As one of the few checks on state legislatures, Dem AGs are gearing up to push back with everything we’ve got – whether it’s filing legal action, supporting local activists, or calling for federal action.
Everyday, I hear from LGBTQ+ members in my home state of Massachusetts and I feel an urgency to protect everyone, especially our young people, from the harms of discrimination and bigotry that I’ve lived through, seen up-close, and want to dispel from our society forever.
To get that done, we need the right people in power up and down the ballot, because state legislators aren’t acting alone. In fact, Republican Attorneys General across the country have been rallying behind legislation that threatens our workplace protections, targets trans youth, and much more.
Even after years in public service, it’s still shocking to see officials misuse their offices to make this country less safe for LGBTQ+ individuals and families. With this latest crusade of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks, we desperately need state AGs who are unflinching advocates for equality.
Democratic AGs truly are “The People’s Lawyers” and DAGA is the only party committee devoted to electing more of them. Since 2016, we’ve won two-thirds of our targeted races, and with more than 30 AG seats up for grabs in the next two years, we need your support – will you chip in today?
