Welcome to Monday, June 21st, upper- and lower-decks...

The Biden administration has frozen a $100 million military aid package for Ukraine—amid Russia’s buildup of military forces along Ukraine’s border.

The arms sale was prepared in response to a military buildup by Russia along its border with Ukraine and in Crimea, the Ukrainian territory Russia forcibly annexed in 2014.

Russia began the buildup earlier this spring, as more than 100,000 troops, armored vehicles, and heavy artillery were moved to the region. Moscow claimed the forces are there for training exercises, according to Politico.

The decision to freeze the provision of lethal weaponry to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities could be viewed as undercutting the public remarks made by Biden after his summit with Putin, when he told a press conference:

“I communicated the United States’ unwavering commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

Save me.

50% of all sea turtles have ingested plastic.

Sea turtles confuse plastic bags for jellyfish—they'll eat the bag, which gets stuck in their stomach.

Hundreds of thousands die each year from ocean pollution, with scores of sea turtles ingesting - or becoming entangled in - marine debris.

** A History of Civil Rights Legislation in America
------------------------------------------------------------

On Friday, July 2nd, the U.S. will mark the 57th anniversary of the enactment of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 ([link removed]) , the most significant civil rights legislation since Reconstruction. It prohibited the segregation policies that relegated Black Americans to separate schools, restaurants, restrooms, and drinking fountains during the Jim Crow era.

While the 1964 bill rightfully gets recognition for its role in the advancement of civil rights, it’s just one of many notable civil rights bills that have been enacted since the Civil War.

Here, we look back at some of the major civil rights bills in American history. ([link removed])
