Personal note for John: I'm a member of the Supporter Services team here at the IRC and I'm trying to reach out to as many of our supporters as I can. Since you're a valued member of the IRC community, I wanted to make sure you were one of the first to know about this opportunity to amplify your impact. To recognize World Refugee Day and the courageousness of refugees everywhere, an anonymous donor will contribute $10,000 for families in crisis zones — IF we can get 100 new monthly donors to sign up. Will you be one of them?
Your monthly gift can help families like mine, John. My husband and I were refugees from Sri Lanka. During the civil war we were moving targets, caught in the middle of a brutal conflict between Tamil separatists and the Sinhalese government. For years we hid in the shadows to escape the constant violence, harassment, and imprisonment. Eventually we were forced to flee for our safety.
We were lucky to be able to settle in New York — and our IRC caseworker was instrumental in helping us secure an apartment, get the resources we needed to start our new lives, and finally feel safe.
I know firsthand how difficult and terrifying it is to leave your home. It takes immense courage to start over in a new country and rebuild your life. Thanks to my work at the IRC, I've met many other refugees who have stories just like mine. Stories of sacrifice, courage, and true resilience. |
