John —

I’ve spent the last week thinking about what it means that Donald Trump’s Justice Department subpoenaed records related to Members of Congress, our staff, and family.

And my concerns have only grown.

Not because this is about me. It isn’t. Far from it. In fact, I’m not even sure what they were looking for or why. It’s about what Donald Trump tried to do to our democracy. And frankly, it’s about what he did.

He destroyed norms. He smashed into guardrails. He put our democracy in peril. And his party has continued his assault on our democratic institutions since he left the Oval Office.

He demanded to have his perceived political enemies investigated for treason. He lied about an election being stolen. And more. It was all out in the open, and he didn’t try to hide it.

And we’re going to find out a lot more in the coming months. But all of these revelations remind us of a chilling, yet, fundamental truth:

We are a nation of laws. But ultimately, we're reliant on the people sworn to protect it to do the right thing. In the absence of those willing to stand up for our democracy, it can, tragically, be lost.

I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: Donald Trump left our democracy hanging by a thread. This isn’t hyperbole. Because what we do now will determine its trajectory, and that of our nation, for decades to come.

Simply put, we must act. And here’s where we can start:

We need to enshrine our democratic ideals – and yes, our guardrails – into law. We need to make sure the independence of the DOJ is enshrined in law. We need to stop the abuse of the pardon power. And we must stop another president, of either party, from doing what Trump did.

We need to protect and expand the right to vote, to ensure that all Americans, particularly people of color, are not disenfranchised. Because when more people vote, we all win.

Listen, the path forward isn’t going to be easy. It was hard after Nixon. And it will be hard now. And unlike Nixon, today’s Republican Party has an unfailing propaganda mouthpiece in Fox News, and a conspiracy theory-spreader like no other, in Donald Trump.

And unlike 1974 our two parties couldn't be more different: One willing to stand up for democracy, and another that has devolved into an autocratic, anti-truth cult, with more allegiance to a man in Mar-a-Lago than our Constitution.

It will be really hard. It already is. But we have no choice. And our democracy is worth it.

So at this crossroads in our history, I’m asking for your help. It is clear that the only way our nation will continue to survive is to have stronger Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate.

We cannot trust Republicans to do the right thing, not when they have pledged their fealty and loyalty to the former president over our nation's future. If you can, please pitch in $10, $25, or more so we can support Democrats across the country, power our grassroots movement, and expand our majorities in the midterms.

Your help at this moment is critical. Democrats cannot rely on big money donors to fix our democracy – we need the people. People like you. Pitching in what they can. For this government of the people, by the people, can only flourish if we play a part in protecting it.

Thank you for your continued support in this fight for our democracy. With your help, we can and will prevail.
