Friend: Twenty years ago, the United Nations General Assembly decided that June 20 would be observed as World Refugee Day, a time to reflect on the struggles of more than 79 million forcibly displaced people and take action to help. But Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was on the ground long before that, helping refugees and other displaced people living in precarious conditions without access to health care and other essential services.
In fact, our very first large-scale medical program was started in 1975 to help Cambodian refugees seeking sanctuary from Pol Pot’s oppressive regime. Our organization has grown a lot since then, and so have the needs of our patients—especially those living in overcrowded, unsanitary refugee camps where essential services are limited or nonexistent.
Living in places like these was difficult even before the COVID-19 pandemic, and has now become even more dangerous. That's why this World Refugee Day, thanks to a generous donor, all gifts made before midnight tonight will be matched to ensure our teams can continue to provide lifesaving aid to forcibly displaced people, and to vulnerable communities around the world.
Helping refugees is a core tenet of our medical humanitarian work. In addition to essential medical services like mental health support and treatment for sexual violence, our teams are working tirelessly to address the COVID-19 pandemic in places where the risk is highest.
That’s because we’ve made a commitment to stand in solidarity with refugees and other forcibly displaced people who need our help most. While much has changed at MSF over the years, our commitment has never wavered. And we have never acted alone — we've done it with the help of supporters like you.

President, MSF-USA Board of Directors
All gifts given, up to $250,000, will be doubled through 11:59 PM EST on June 20. Every dollar you give will be matched with $1. Gifts received after the match has been met will not be matched, but will be used where needed most.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
