Dear friend,
[[link removed]] On my life's list of extremely special days, this year's Father's Day is right behind the day my son Elijah was born 14 years ago. My name is Eric Cabrera, and you may remember that Kevin Ring sent you an email about me last Father's Day — when I was in prison.
Today I am writing to you as a free man. I have to say: Freedom is amazing. My last Father's Day before prison was in 2009. Yes, 12 years ago! Elijah was only two years old then. A lot has changed in my son's life since I've been away, and adjusting to my baby boy now being a teenager is challenging, but we make it work. Since I've been home, we spend every day doing something fun, from riding bikes, playing video games, even kayaking. I was also able to finally attend a milestone moment in the academic area of Elijah's life — his 8th grade graduation!
Every moment is special. I cannot make up for lost time, but I am committed to creating great times from here on out with Elijah. I celebrate Father's Day every day now, and it's a joy and an honor to be the father of such an amazing kid.
In Kevin's email last year, he quoted me as saying, "do whatever it takes to love above your circumstances." I continue to stand by those same words. Whether incarcerated or free, be the best father you can be regardless of the situation.
And as we celebrate Father's Day, let's continue to remember all the fathers and their children who are affected by the criminal justice system. Happy Father's Day.
Sincerely,
Eric Cabrera for FAMM
