John -- Father’s Day is a time to celebrate the dads in our lives, and this year we’re grateful that dozens of dads have been reunited with their children.
But three years ago, Father’s Day looked vastly different: We were outside the Ursula Detention Center near McAllen, Texas keeping vigil and protesting the horror of Trump’s family separation policy. Children who’d just been torn from their dads and moms reached out to us from bus windows as they were shipped to jails and shelters around the country.
It’s an inconceivable trauma that will last lifetimes, and the scale of the horror is still being unravelled. This Father’s Day, we honor the power of a father’s love and those who have moved mountains to get their children out of harm’s way. Every father who came with their children in search of a better life should never have to fear being separated from their child, period.
Too many children will go to bed tonight with no idea where their parents are, and you can learn more about the family reunification efforts by joining our supporter call on June 24.
We can’t change the past, but we can make sure our future is reflective of our commitment to treat people with dignity — regardless of who they are or where they come from. People seeking protection deserve a warm welcome, not detention or separation for trying to do what any parent would do: Get their child out of harm’s way.
We won’t stop until every dad can celebrate Father’s Day with their child. We hope you’ll join us June 24 — and to all our supporters who are dads, a very special Happy Father’s Day to you from the Families Belong Together team.
