Dear Friend,

Today is Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States.

While slavery was abolished by the 13th Amendment of the Constitution, a loophole exists that allows slavery as a “punishment for a crime.”

It's simple: When we allow slavery to exist in any circumstance, we violate human dignity.

There is no place in our society where a loophole allowing people to be enslaved should exist -- especially not in our country’s most powerful document. Furthermore, it’s a violation of international law.

We all deserve to live in a place where our constitution protects us and reflects our values. But right now there’s a loophole in our constitution that allows for slavery and involuntary servitude to remain legal.

Slavery is a deep moral wrong, a violation of our best values, and a stain on our nation and its history. No person should ever be enslaved or treated as a slave for any reason.

Thank you for being in this fight with us.
