John,
I’ll never forget the voting rallies my father Bishop McKinley Young led in the new South Africa with local leaders as the country transitioned from Apartheid to Democracy in 1994. Thousands packed gyms and auditoriums to learn how to cast their first ballot. It was the longest ballot I’ve ever seen with about 19 candidates, their parties and photos of their faces -- including future President Nelson Mandela. The lines on Election Day went on for miles and you could feel the excitement in the atmosphere. It was there at 10 years old that I realized how important voting is and the impact we can have when we work together for our collective greater good.
His activism did not start in South Africa, as a son of Georgia, my father was active in civic engagement his entire life and that activism continued throughout his career from leading Souls to the Polls on Sundays in the states he served like Florida,Texas and Ohio, to marching for farm workers in California and fighting for voting rights.
As the Senior Bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church -- the oldest African American denomination -- Dad believed that his faith required him to always uplift and get into the good fight for the wellbeing of all people. He believed that we all inextricably linked and one way to create lasting change is to vote, organize and take collective action.
After losing him in January of 2019, Father’s Day is challenging and I know I'm not alone. I am so grateful for the legacy of love, life and service he left behind. He was my first and greatest civics teacher, and you too can be that teacher for a young person in your life. Remember they are always watching what you do.
So as we celebrate Father’s Day today, we also know it’s more important than ever that we get educated, get engaged, get organized, and get everyone we know to join together and say, with one voice, that we should be making it easier, not harder, to vote. It’s really that simple.
When We All Vote is here to help. I hope you’ll sign up today to get information on teaching your kids about this moment, civic engagement, why voting and participating in our democracy is important, and our My School Votes program. [[link removed]]
We hope that you have a wonderful Fathers Day with your Dad, biological or surrogate, or take time to honor his memory as I honor mine.
