See what this year’s World Refugee Day emoji represents.

Dear John,

Today is World Refugee Day, a time to honour the courage and contributions of the millions of people around the world forced to flee violence and persecution. I am so pleased to share this day with you and the millions of other UNHCR supporters around the world.

My name is Hangama, and I am an Afghan-Canadian artist and former refugee. When I was young, I entered a UNHCR-sponsored art contest that changed my life. I won a scholarship to university and now am lucky enough to exhibit my work all over the world.

This year, I had the honour to design the World Refugee Day emoji, a blue heart cupped between two hands. The emoji symbolizes hope, togetherness and love. These are the things I held onto during my journey to safety.

Each World Refugee Day we also celebrate the people like you who have opened up their countries, communities, hearts – and sometimes even homes – to those who seek to rebuild their lives in safety and peace.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that together we are stronger. Thank you for your continued support of UNHCR and its lifesaving work. Together, we can accomplish anything.

Sincerely,

Hangama Amiri
