Friends —
Project ID Action Fund is joining communities around the country to recognize and celebrate Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
A quick history lesson: The Emancipation Proclamation was signed January 1, 1863, officially freeing enslaved people. However, news of emancipation did not reach people and places equally, especially in southern Confederate states. Juneteenth, also referred to as Freedom Day, marks the day when word of liberation arrived in Galveston, Texas more than two years later.
This Juneteenth, we are proud to highlight TheFirst72+, an organization dedicated to stopping the cycle of incarceration by providing free transitional housing, case management, peer mentorship, and legal services to formerly incarcerated individuals. For these individuals, the first 72 hours once they are released are critical in ensuring they have what they need to succeed.

At Project ID Action Fund, we advocate for laws and policies to help our communities obtain the IDs they need for jobs, housing, voting, health care, and, most importantly, identity. Different communities face various obstacles to obtaining or modifying their IDs. Most returning citizens exit incarceration with no form of legal ID, making it impossible for them to restart their lives and fully regain their freedom.
Friends, recognizing the freedom of ALL is inherent in the spirit of Juneteenth. Organizations like First72 and Project ID work everyday to help formerly incarcerated and justice-involved citizens reclaim their freedom, independence, and full rights of citizenship. Can you split a donation between us and First72 to lift communities up and help them receive the resources they need to succeed?

We encourage you to participate in Juneteenth events and reflect on what this holiday represents. Together, we can continue to spread awareness and promote freedom, liberation, and citizenship.
Happy Juneteenth,
-Project ID HQ
