Happy Juneteenth, John.

Today commemorates the 156th anniversary of when the last enslaved Americans were finally freed from bondage in Galveston, Texas. Although the Civil War had ended several months earlier, the news of freedom did not reach the enslaved people of Galveston until June 19th.

Juneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate freedom, acknowledge our country's reprehensible history of enslavement, and take action to continue the march toward justice. It is a crucial day for our country.

That's why, earlier this week, I cast my vote in favor of making Juneteenth a national holiday. Enshrining this holiday into federal law was a long overdue move, and I was glad to see this measure pass in the Senate with unanimous support.

Of course, this move alone will not get our country to where we need to be. The work to achieve racial justice and end systemic racism will require much more from all of us, and I remain committed to this fight.

We cannot stop this work until we create a country in which Black Americans are not targeted with violence because of the color of their skin, are not incarcerated at a higher rate than any other racial or ethnic groups, and are not discriminated against on a daily basis.

Today and every day, let’s recommit ourselves to focusing on working hard together to deliver real change for our country.

Happy Juneteenth,

Chris
