‌Juneteenth marks the day the last enslaved people got word of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

This is a time for us to reflect on the work we still must do to realize our country's founding principles — liberty and justice for all.

Even after the Emancipation Proclamation, Black Americans still had to fight for the right to full participation in our democracy.

And even though we consider the era of Jim Crow to be in our past, its ugly legacy lingers today.

Here in Georgia, we are on the frontlines of the battle for voting rights.

And if we don't fight back, we will see the effect of voter suppression tactics on next year's midterms.

So today, in the spirit of Juneteenth, we must renew our commitment to protecting our sacred right to vote and fighting to further equality in our country.

We stand on the shoulders of the giants who sacrificed so much for enfranchisement.

I hope you'll join me in honoring them today by recommitting to our fight for a democracy that includes everyone.

With love,

Lucy
