Happy Juneteenth, John!
Juneteenth is the anniversary of the day enslaved Black people were freed in the United States after the Civil War. I’m especially proud to be an Oregonian today because our state has declared Juneteenth an official holiday!
Of course, first and foremost, this holiday is about commemorating the emancipation that took place over a century ago. But it's also taken on an additional meaning: Juneteenth serves as a critical reminder of the Black community's continuous fight for freedom today.
This includes freedom from police brutality; Freedom from voter suppression; Freedom from housing discrimination. And so much more.
Together, as a country that holds freedom among its highest values, we must dedicate ourselves to this work - with the goal of securing justice and equality for the Black community. We must ALL do our part in rooting out racism.
