John -- I applaud the passing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
But make no mistake, we have so much further to go in addressing the impact of slavery. I echo the sentiments of BNC incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who sponsored the bill and attended the signing earlier this week:
This is a symbolic victory: necessary, but not nearly enough. Slavery is not something that's in our distant past when we still live with its legacy every single day. Our institutions were created and designed to protect the white and wealthy and oppress the rest of us -- and these systems are still in place today. -- Rep. Jamaal Bowman
Passing this bill was long overdue. Yet we are still plagued with systemic racism through housing discrimination and segregation, inequities in health care, wealth inequity, and the prison pipeline leading to the mass incarceration of Black men.
To get where we need to be, this fight is going to require all of us banding together. Look how long it took for this day to become a national holiday. And STILL some GOP members of Congress voted NO!
We can’t let up for one day in the fight for justice, and we need you with us every step of the way.
Please pitch in and support Brand New Congress in our efforts to elect fierce progressive fighters who will stand with Jamaal and our other BNC reps to bring justice to this country.
In solidarity,
Adrienne Bell
Executive Director
Brand New Congress
Since 2016 BNC has led the way in advancing popular policies like Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and Abolishing ICE. In 2018 we recruited and elected AOC. In 2020, we elected Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman, and we helped Rashida Tlaib win a tough re-election fight.
We are building yet another strong slate of progressives for 2022. Pitch in today and join us as we take over Congress and return power to the people.
