Team, today is Juneteenth -- an important day in our nation’s history when the last slaves were informed of their freedom in Galveston, Texas, 1865.
Although this day has been overlooked in the past, today its importance has been renewed, as we reconcile our values with many of the grave racial injustices that still persist in our society.
From police brutality to mass incarceration, many of the long-lasting effects of slavery are still felt in Black neighborhoods and communities.
This Junteenth, let’s do more than wax poetic. Let’s take action.
I was proud to help pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the House along with my Democratic colleagues.
But now, this critical and urgent legislation has STALLED in the Senate.
Team -- will you join me in calling on the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to truly honor Juneteenth? I need 5,000 strong Democrats to sign on in order to get their attention. »
Thanks for standing up and taking action. And Happy Juneteenth.
