John —
Today is Juneteenth — a day in our history which recognizes the moment the news of slavery ending in America reached the final enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. This is a day worth celebrating, but we also must recognize the systemic oppression the Black community still faces today.
156 years have passed since the ending of slavery in the United States, but our country has yet to truly reckon with the legacy that slavery has left on our society. We’re still dealing with housing discrimination, unequal access to healthcare, and now, state legislatures all across our country are actively disenfranchising Black voters by passing racist voter suppression laws.
Black Americans face inequities that require lasting reform to fix. We must continue our fight for equality and justice for all, and that starts by taking meaningful action both as citizens and as leaders. The road ahead is an uphill one, but I will keep fighting until we reach a better tomorrow.
Now, as we celebrate Juneteenth, we must use this day to recognize the injustices the Black community continues to face and commit ourselves to the fight for freedom for ALL Americans.
Best,
Jan
