Hi John -

Juneteenth, celebrated each year on June 19, is the commemoration of the day in 1865 when federal troops liberated more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas by executive decree. Even though we've made incredible strides towards progress, more than 150 years later, unencumbered freedom remains out of reach for many. Today, Black lives are profoundly impacted by mass incarceration, racially motivated police brutality, and rampant voter suppression.

Right now, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to enact common sense voting reforms, expand voting rights, and put the brakes on dozens of voter suppression bills aimed at limiting Black and Brown Americans' access to the ballot box. It's critical that we celebrate and honor Black resilience and liberty by fortifying our sacred right to vote: we must continue to fight for freedom, we must pass the For the People Act.

Though our history is rife with injustice, and the fight for freedom continues I remain hopeful and inspired by our future yet to come. Collectively, we have the power to change things by electing politicians who are accountable to all communities and not just a few, and who are also adamant about protecting and celebrating Black lives.

However you celebrate this weekend, know that while the work continues, your joy is precious, our history is rich and the future is brighter than ever if we take action together.
