Today is Juneteenth, our
nation’s second Independence Day, the day which marks the end of
slavery in the United States.
On June 19th, 1865, Union Soldiers rode into Galveston,
Texas, to inform the enslaved that they were now free, two years
after the end of the Civil War.
Through Reconstruction, the early 20th century, the Civil
Rights Movement, and into today, Black Americans have struggled
towards justice and equity, an American promise we have to work to realize.
This Juneteenth, let us build on the action of marking this
day as a federal holiday and reaffirm our commitment to working
towards a country that treats all Americans with dignity,
kindness, and respect — regardless of skin color, ethnicity, or
identity.
