Hi,

On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas finally learned they were free.

Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day. It’s an opportunity for all communities across our state and nation to celebrate freedom, honor Black Americans and their history, and recommit ourselves to confronting and growing from the tragedies of our past.

We recognize that there is still so much work to be done here in Minnesota, nationwide, and globally to eliminate the inequities in our society and end the systemic racism that has plagued our state and our country for far too long.

Let us come together around our shared humanity and continue this march towards justice.

Sincerely,

Tim Walz
