It’s Juneteenth, friend.
On this day, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally granted the freedom afforded to them by President Abraham Lincoln.
Today, we pause to celebrate freedom and independence, commemorating the resilience of Black people despite the brutality of slavery and racism, and restore our commitment to fighting for a more just and equitable world.
The fight for racial equity and justice is far from over. The murder of George Floyd and the innumerable victims of police brutality are just the latest reminders of our broken system and the way that systemic racism robs Black people of their humanity.
For Juneteenth, Arizona Democrats are helping raise money for the NAACP, Black Lives Matter Action Network, and the Southern Poverty Law Center to help end systemic racism. These organizations are working to make America what it must become, a nation of equal rights and undeniable justice.
