People For Member,

Today marks Juneteenth, the day in 1865 that Union soldiers marched into
Galveston, Texas and announced the news that the Civil War had ended and
that all of those who had been enslaved were now free. President Biden and
Congress made history this week by making this day a federal holiday. But
right-wing leaders across the country are working to undermine this
important move in another, deeply worrisome way.

Far Right lawmakers nationwide are working to eliminate Black American
history from our education system. Legislators are pushing to ban what’s
known as “critical race theory” in K-12 schools in an unsubtle effort to
whitewash the reality of America’s history to justify their
anti-democratic activities and resist the progressive change we need.

We cannot let the Right obstruct the truth of our country’s history as a
cynical and racist means to obstruct crucial progressive efforts.

Make no mistake, this is Trump’s racist agenda continuing through his GOP
puppets. These state legislators have been bolstered by our national
leaders – Mitch McConnell has decried the prospect of white students
having to learn actual facts about slavery, which is utter nonsense.

These latest attacks are attempts to ban not only any talk of race and
racism, but also to actively bury the truth of structural racism. That’s
what this push against the teaching of our nation’s history of racial
injustice is all about – maintaining the status quo while attempting to
undermine the national movement underway to improve racial equity.

Arkansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Tennessee, and Texas have already passed
legislation preventing schools from teaching about racism, and Idaho,
Florida, and several other states are all currently working towards doing
the same. We MUST denounce these efforts and support Black history
education in ALL of our schools.

schools and denounce the racist attacks by Republican leaders! >>

Continuing to allow this racist push by the Right jeopardizes our
education system, harms not just Black Americans, but all Americans, and
undermines racial justice progress that has been made in recent decades.
In order for us to move forward as an equitable and just society, we must
have an education system which acknowledges and reckons with the
atrocities of our past.
