Hello,
Over two years passed before news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.
Ever since, Americans have celebrated emancipation on June 19th. Black Americans and people of color have continued to fight for their civil rights -- and their right to simply exist -- in the many years since the first Juneteenth. Yet, the struggle continues.
Today, we live in an era of mass incarceration. Families are torn apart by unequal enforcement of the law. Black Americans are killed disproportionately during encounters with police. Racism is expressed in more subtle ways than it once was, but discrimination and hate continue in the workplace, in schools, and in our communities. While we have achieved progress in fits and starts, our work to build a "more perfect union" is far from done.
Yet despite the struggles along the way, Juneteenth has endured. It is a day of celebration and reflection when people around the Nation will gather together in solidarity to fight for an America where equality is more than a slogan. That's why I voted to make Juneteenth a federal holiday and why I have closed all of my offices in observance of the day.
Today, on Juneteenth, I want to recommit to working with you to build a more just and equal union for all of us. I invite you to find a Juneteenth event in your community and join the celebration, no matter your background. I'm glad to have you with me as we mark this day and look forward to what we can achieve together.
Thank you,
Bob Casey
