Hi John,
Today is Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. While most Americans look to July 4th as their day of independence, Juneteenth is the day when enslaved people in Texas were told they were freeā¦ two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
The fight for full freedom and equality for Black Americans, however, continues to this day. And part of the system blocking that reality is our government -- local, state, and federal.
Since our nation's inception, government has been intertwined with white supremacy, inflicting abominable trauma on Black people. Run for Something aims to help end this by electing young anti-racist progressives to office, and especially ensuring the Black community is reflected at every level of leadership.
Now, elections will
not solve all of our issues -- but we believe it is one of many steps we must take to dismantle the ongoing systems of hate, oppression, and violence in our country.
This Juneteenth, we're asking you to split a donation between Run for Something and 37 of our endorsed Black candidates. Chip in now to help Black young progressives win the power to make change >>>
2021 has had some real highs and real lows. We celebrated the inauguration of the first woman of color into the executive branch with VP Kamala Harris and we've all helped the White House push for legislation like investing $225 billion for child care and the For The People Act. But we've also seen Republicans push new waves of anti-voter and anti-trans youth laws at the state and local levels.
This cycle of steps forward and backward can be exhausting -- but we can never, ever give up, John. For generations, activists have shed blood, sweat, and tears to reform our government, to break the cycle, to deliver tangible change for the people...
all the people.
The work of replacing bigoted elected officials with representative agents of change is a continuation of that legacy. Run for Something is committed to electing new faces to power, to put "the people closest to the pain... closest to the power," as Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley has said.
You've always been part of this work, John. Today, we're asking you to continue fighting for progress alongside our Black candidates by chipping into their campaigns in celebration of Juneteenth.
Thank you,
Run for Something
