John, Happy Juneteenth! I know folks around the block are heading out to enjoy their celebrations safely with loved ones and friends, and I hope to see many of you out there. But first, I want to take a few moments to reflect on the meaning behind today.

Juneteenth is our Independence Day, John. On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas were finally freed. The news of their emancipation reached them well after other Black Americans won their liberty, and to this day, Juneteenth is the oldest celebration of the emancipation of slavery in America.

This week, I voted with the majority of my colleagues in the House to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. It headed to President Joe Biden's desk for a signature, and I had the honor of attending the signing at the White House.

Juneteenth is a time for us to stop and celebrate the remarkable strength, creativity, and resiliency of our people. It's also a chance to remember our nation's 400-year history of systemic and cultural racism and recommit to the movement for justice and lived equality for all.

The events of the past year reminded the world that things don't change when we all sit in silence. We change the system when we fight for what we believe in and use our collective power to demand justice, accountability, and action. That's why I will continue to fight the good fight and to use my voice to secure a country that is truly just and equal for all.

Together, we shall overcome.
