OCA National Virtual Summit 2021

"Building Hope Through Solidarity" is a virtual three-day summit consisting of plenaries, workshops, and entertainment for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and allies across the country. The summit will consist of advocacy training and issue-based workshops centering around empowering and mobilizing individuals to respond to different community needs, as well as building upon our own strengths and wellbeing.

IMAGE Magazine Spring/Summer 2021
IMAGE is OCA's magazine publication that comes out twice a year. For our Spring/Summer 2021 issue, we will be highlighting turning points and moments of change in our collective history as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and how these past experiences propel us into the future. Now more than ever, AAPI advocacy is crucial for AAPI empowerment, thus we recall the past, legacies of injustice and violence, to imagine a new world that supports, protects, and gives voice to AAPI people.

We are looking for submissions of art, articles, op-eds, poetry and creative writing, and other forms of digital media that reflect this act of remembrance and spirit of advocacy. Submissions should be sent no later than Friday, July 9, 2021 to [email protected].

June is Immigrant Heritage Month and we are celebrating with the flavors that define our experiences as immigrants or children of immigrants. Join us on Instagram and Twitter by using the hashtag #MyImmigrantFoodStory to share photos and stories about a dish or food item that is meaningful to you. OCA: AAPI History Webinars
Lady, our Chapter & Membership Associate, has released information on the rest of our four-part series where we break down hate crimes against AAPIs in American History. Be sure to mark your calendars to join our conversations unpacking important and overlooked moments in history that have greatly impacted the AAPI community today. The Legacy of Vincent Chin: Resistance, Remembrance, Renewal

To commemorate the 39th anniversary of Vincent Chin’s passing this month, ACA Detroit will host a webinar entitled “The Legacy of Vincent Chin: Resistance, Remembrance, Renewal" on Saturday, June 19 at 2 PM Eastern. This intergenerational panel will discuss what the Vincent Chin case means for Asian American activism today—and in the future. The event will feature activist and author Helen Zia; attorney and University of Michigan A/PIA Studies lecturer Roland Hwang; and attorney Jim Shimoura. Zia, Hwang, and Shimoura led the campaign for justice for Vincent Chin, and they continue to champion equality and civil rights protections for Asian Americans. They will be joined by two emerging voices in the AAPI community: Anna Dang (Southeast Asia Resource Action Center) and Anna Lin (Association of Chinese Americans). Charting the Next Phase in Closing the Digital Divide

The FCC’s Emergency Broadband Benefit has helped make important strides towards closing the digital divide and serves as a springboard to a more just and equitable future. But as vaccination rates rise and our country begins to return to a post-COVID “new normal,” advocates for disadvantaged communities are forced to ask: What’s next? As part of our ongoing conversation about policies and initiatives to tackle the digital divide, OCA, ALLvanza, and the Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council (MMTC) will explore permanent solutions that can guarantee meaningful, effective internet access to all communities for the long run. IRS Tax Tips

Be careful and be on alert about Advanced Child Tax Credit (ACTC) scams via phone calls, emails or text messages and not give scammers any of their information. Watch out for scammers that suggest they can get you the advance Child Tax Credit payments by working with IRS on your behalf. www.irs.gov/childtaxcredit2021
