John,
On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free -- more than two years after President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we celebrate that date as Juneteenth, and it's an opportunity to take stock of where we are in the fight for racial justice.
At a recent retreat, the entire NDRC team read Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Reading it at this time in American history provided us with valuable insights and inspiration as we seek to pursue a more racially just society through our work at the NDRC and in our personal lives.
There are many ways to commemorate Juneteenth, but if you're looking for one, we suggest reading -- or rereading -- Dr. King's letter. You can find it here.
