Dear Friend,

Did you know that slavery is still legal in the United States?

The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”

For more than a century, our federal and state constitutions have preserved the right of those in power to enslave people as punishment for a crime.

This loophole stands as a monument to one of the darkest moments from our past.

We all deserve to live in a place where our constitution protects us and reflects our values. But right now there’s a loophole in our constitution that allows for slavery and involuntary servitude to remain legal.

When we allow slavery to exist in any circumstance, we violate human dignity.

We must pass the Abolition Amendment, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude may be imposed as a punishment for a crime,” to end the exception in the 13th Amendment. It’s time to abolish slavery and involuntary servitude once and for all.

See you there!
