Friend,
For years, our country has tried to address the rising epidemic of gun violence at the federal level. And for years, our leaders have failed to pass meaningful reform.
But here in Virginia, we’ve led the way by making progress on our own. That’s why I joined Senator Tim Kaine in introducing our Virginia Plan to Reduce Gun Violence Act.
This legislation builds on commonsense reforms Virginia passed in 2020 to reduce gun violence — if you agree that it’s time for change at the federal level, add your name now to support our efforts.
Our proposed legislation would enact:
- Universal Background Checks: Background checks would be required on all firearm sales and transfers, including for weapons sold online and at gun shows.
- One-Handgun-a-Month: Individuals would be limited to purchasing one handgun a month to curtail the stockpiling and trafficking of firearms.
- Reporting of Lost or Stolen Firearms: Gun owners would be required to report lost or stolen firearms to the appropriate state or local law enforcement agency within 48 hours.
- Preventing Firearm Access to Minors: Individuals would be held liable for leaving a loaded, unsecured gun in the presence of a minor, thereby encouraging safe, responsible gun ownership.
- Protection Order Prohibitions: This would close the “boyfriend loophole” by prohibiting non-spousal abusive partners, and those convicted of dating violence and stalking, from possessing firearms. This would provide additional protections to victims of intimate partner violence.
- Extreme Risk Protection Orders: This would establish a federal extreme risk protection order to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose a high risk of harming themselves or others. It would also incentivize states to implement their own extreme risk protection laws and court protocols.
These measures are working in Virginia, and Americans in every corner of our country deserve to live under the same protections. I’m committed to doing everything I can to make that a reality.
I hope you’ll join me and sign on to support legislation that will keep all Americans safer.
Thank you for being with me in this fight,
Mark Warner
