ConocoPhillips’ so-called Willow project began under the Trump Administration, when the COVID-19 pandemic was used as an excuse to rush through a mandatory public comment period.
John,
While we have been generally pleased with the Biden Administration’s work in the Arctic so far — including efforts to roll back Donald Trump’s sale of drilling rights in the Arctic Refuge to fossil fuel companies — we were disappointed by a decision made recently to defend a massive oil drilling project in the National Petroleum Reserve.
ConocoPhillips’ so-called Willow project began under the Trump Administration, when the COVID-19 pandemic was used as an excuse to rush through a mandatory public comment period. The ultimate environmental review failed to examine the project’s cumulative environmental impacts or consider alternative constructions to protect key natural resources.
SEEC PAC is glad to have an ally in the White House who acknowledges the reality of climate change and is welcome, not hostile, to science. But in this instance, we believe the Biden Administration is making a mistake to defend this massive, rushed Arctic fossil fuel project in court. John — SEEC members are pro-environment, first and foremost. That is why they are leading the way in questioning the decision from the Biden Administration to defend this major Alaska oil drilling project in court.
“The Biden administration’s decision to back ConocoPhillips’ massive oil and gas project in Alaska needs to be coupled with a careful review of the environmental impacts this project will have on Native American communities and on air, water, wildlife and climate stability,” SEEC Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva said. “Locking in 30 years of fossil fuel production in this location must be done with eyes open and with a credible public input process. The Arctic is already suffering from climate change.”
There can be no doubt that we need to pivot away from fossil fuels and embrace green energy, John. In fact, ConocoPhillips has revealed that part of their drilling project involves installing “chillers” into the ground so the rapidly-warming permafrost remains cold enough to support their extraction equipment.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
