John,
Exactly 50 years after President Nixon declared a national “war on drugs” in the United States, Connecticut lawmakers officially voted to legalize recreational marijuana in our state.
Governor Lamont has vowed to sign the bill soon, which will make Connecticut the 19th state to legalize recreational marijuana, and the 4th state this year.
All of us here at the Connecticut Democratic Party are proud of CT lawmakers for passing this historic bill — will you join us in celebrating today’s victory by chipping in $20 to help us continue fighting for bold progress in Connecticut?
Once signed, possession of marijuana will become legal as of July 1st, with commercial recreational sales likely to begin as soon as next year. It’s estimated that adult-use marijuana sales could generate $73.4 million in tax revenue for our state by 2026 — with an estimated $26 million going toward a social equity and innovation fund.
The so-called American “war on drugs” has in fact been a war on Black and Brown communities — by legalizing marijuana and investing in restorative justice, Connecticut is “moving beyond this terrible period of incarceration and injustice,” as Governor Lamont said of the bill's passage.
And according to the Director of State Policies for the Marijuana Policy Project in the CT Post this week, “Connecticut’s legalization bill is poised to be one of the strongest and possibly the strongest equity-and-comparative justice legislation.”
John, if you can, chip in here to celebrate our state's historic step forward by helping CT Dems continue fighting for public health, safety, and social justice and equity in Connecticut — most CT Republicans voted against this bill, and we need to start working now to ensure that Democrats protect our majorities in the upcoming midterms.
