Parliamentary Diary
Dear Friend,
Four years as Cardiff North's Member of Parliament
It's been four years since the people of Cardiff North put their faith in me as their Member of Parliament. In these four years we've helped nearly 14,500 constituents with enquiries and support on a whole range of issues.
And I
couldn't do it without my brilliant team who are with me through thick and thin.
I want to say a massive thank you for continuing to put your trust in me. I will always feel incredibly privileged to do this job and to represent you on the issues that matter to you most.
Over the last four years and particularly this last year and a half, it's been so heartening to see how our communities have come together and supported one another and to be a part of that. As we mark 5 years since the tragic death of Jo Cox this week, her message of unity: "We have more in common than that which divides us" lives on and is something we can all relate to as we continue to support each other in this pandemic.
Here's an update on what I've been up to in Parliament and Cardiff North over the last couple of weeks. As ever, my team and I are here for you. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate get in touch with me on

West Pontprennau Street Surgery
It was great to join members of West Pontprennau Action Group in a street surgery with Julie Morgan MS this afternoon. Local residents are campaigning against proposals to demolish a house at Clos Nant Glaswg in the place of a cycleway. We'll continue to ensure local concerns are heard as we move through the planning process.
Community Meeting with Velindre
Yesterday evening, we invited local community groups and Velindre to Whitchurch Rugby Club as an opportunity to ask questions and have their say. Numbers were restricted due to covid rules, but it was a productive meeting and what's clear is that the local community would like to see more of these engagement sessions with more detail on particular topics for example, mitigation of future flooding, construction and community benefits etc.
We absolutely understand the continued strength of feeling of many regarding the development. We'll continue to work hard, ask the hard questions and ensure constituents' voices are heard. It is our hope that Velindre will continue to engage with the community on this important issue and we'll continue to hold them to this.
Friends of Flaxland Woods
Julie and I met with Friends of Flaxland Woods again this week for an update on how things are progressing. We are continuing to work with local residents and representatives to save Flaxland Woods from development and facilitate the community in looking after this important green space.
“Victims have no rights”
This is how many victims, including my constituent, Helen, are left feeling as they navigate our broken criminal justice system under the Tories. Traumatised. Vulnerable. Often unsure of their rights. Enough is enough and we must do better.
The criminal justice system fails too many. Thank you for sharing your experiences, Helen. I admire your bravery & tenacity to keep fighting, despite all that you’ve endured. I’ll keep working with the Labour Party to ensure victims are seen, heard supported & protected.
Spring Clean Cymru Tongwynlais
It was great to join community champion Marc Palmer for his second instalment of Spring Clean Cymru litter pick and seeing so many volunteers on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Thank you to the Lewis Arms for providing the refreshments after the pick. It was much appreciated after being out in the heat!

Retail Workers Deserve Protection
[link removed]
Retail workers are our key workers. Our mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. Retail workers had our backs when we needed them most. Now it’s time the UK Government has theirs. Labour's amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill to protect retail workers from abuse and assault is ready to go now. The UK Government must stop letting people down and support it.
Conflict between Israel & Occupied Palestinian Territories
Thank you to every constituent who has messaged me in recent weeks regarding the appalling violence we have witnessed against innocent Palestinian families in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as the alarming intensification in the longstanding conflict between Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.
Unfortunately, I was not selected to speak in the latest debate this week in Parliament. However, I wanted to again place on record my thoughts and concerns. I am strongly calling for the escalating violence on all sides and incendiary behaviour to end. I also strongly condemn the spike in anti-Semitism and islamophobia we have witnessed at home and overseas.
It is my sincere hope that recent events have reinvigorated international pressure and a genuine desire for hostilities to be brought to a peaceful end and with it new hope that meaningful dialogue and peace talks will be resurrected to find a solution which allows Israelis and Palestinians to live and prosper alongside one another safely and securely, as the vast majority of civilians want. I'll continue to press the Foreign Secretary.

Secretary of State Sorely Mistaken
We’ve see an abundance of rhetoric but a scarcity of action from UK Government on overseas fossils fuel project investments. Ahead of the G7 Summit, I challenged the Trade Secretary on her Government's record and new policy littered with exemptions. Here’s my letter after her unsatisfactory reply at the despatch box.

The Prime Minister flies into Cornwall on a private jet to talk climate. So how can this Government expect to be taken seriously as a climate leader, on the biggest threat facing us, when it clearly doesn’t take this issue seriously itself?
I raised this at Trade Questions recently.
Our Broken Criminal Justice System
The criminal justice system under the Conservatives is failing victims. Last week Labour forced a vote to stand up for victims. I voted to ensure victims are seen, supported and protected. But the Tories didn’t even show up.
What's on: Wales
Wales flying at the Euros
We've seen excellent performances from our Wales team who've done us proud in the Euros so far. I'll keep cheering them on at home as we move through the competition!
Australia Trade Agreement in Principle
In the last few days we've seen the UK Government come to an agreement in principle on trade with Australia. The Australia Trade Deal is a rushed, botched job and will cause irreversible damage to Welsh Farmers and rural communities. The UK Government should be safeguarding the farming industry during this difficult time, not pulling the rug out from underneath it. The National Farmers' Union have been clear - they see far more drawbacks and difficulties than benefits for the farming industry.
I joined Politics Wales recently and urged the Tory Government to stop trading away the future of family farms and communities.

World Blood Donor Day
A historic moment this week as changes to eligibility rules mean many more LGBT+ people will be able to donate blood. As part of a four-nation agreement, the Welsh Government announced in December the ending of blanket restrictions which prevented many LGBT+ people from giving blood.
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
