55 isn’t going to cut it, Senator Manchin.
You know what didn’t get 55 votes in the Senate? The bill to create a January 6 commission to fully investigate the deadly attack on the Capitol. Changing the filibuster from 60 votes to 55 wouldn’t have changed that. The filibuster needs to be ended for the sake of our Democracy.
But it’s not just the January 6 commission. The For the People Act — a historic voting rights bill to take on the GOP’s voter suppression rampage — would STILL be stuck in the Senate if the filibuster threshold was lowered to 55. It’s the same case with humane immigration reform, combating climate change, getting big money out of politics, the PRO Act, a $15 minimum wage, and gun safety reform. None of it will pass with 55 votes because the GOP obstructionists won’t allow it.
The policies that Pramila and her Democratic colleagues in the House have passed are overwhelmingly popular among voters across party lines, just like the American Rescue Plan was. By ending the filibuster, we can finally PASS them with a simple majority.
The voters who turned out in massive numbers in the general election and Georgia runoff elections don't want Democrats to weaken our proposals in order to get the support of a senator from a Republican party that wants to stop us at every turn. They just want us to go big, go bold, and go fast on the change we promised them. They want results — and we must deliver them. Full stop.
In solidarity,
