Cleaning Up Wellington!

I enjoyed getting amongst clean-up efforts in Mt Vic and Oriental Bay a few weeks ago. Great to see so many people and groups taking action for our environment.

That haul of tires is thanks to the Ghost Fishing, divers who are making a mission of clearing rubbish from our harbours - tires, bottles, road cones - you name it they find it.

They were working on the Oriental Bay beach clean-up. Great work by the Oriental Bay Residents Association and local school student Erinn Aspell (pictured) who has shown leadership in bringing together Our Seas Our Future and dozens of locals together to clean the rubbish from our local beaches.

I also helped out at the Mt Victoria Clean-Up, a regular community effort led by Trish from the Mt Vic Hub. Amazing seeing how much rubbish we collected in just one hour!

Mt Vic Tunnel Update

Official information I’ve obtained from the Treasury shows officials shared my concern about the Government’s plan to delay construction of a second Mt Vic tunnel.

The above quote is an excerpt from a Treasury document responding to the Government’s Let’s Get Wellington Moving proposals.

I wonder if the “explanation” can be found in Julie-Anne Genter’s letter?

Business Confidence Falls

I’m concerned to see businesses losing confidence in Wellington. Sadly part of a nationwide trend under this Labour-led Government.

The Chamber of Commerce conducts a regular survey of local business and has found attitudes about the Wellington region’s prospects have turned negative.

National will continue to hold the Government to account for its failures, while developing policies to ensure we can turn around New Zealand’s slowing economy, invest in future-proofed infrastructure, deliver better public services and restore business confidence.

You can read more on the recent business survey in the Dominion Post article at this link.

Ignite Consultants Wellington Celebration

Congratulations to the Victoria University students involved in Ignite Consultants Wellington whose community celebration I joined last week.

Ignite recruits smart socially-minded students to give their time and skills to help-out non-profit organisations. Such a great concept.

Mahatma Gandhi 150th Anniversary

Last week we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, the International Day of Non-Violence. I joined Wellingtonians in paying tribute to the man known as the Father of the Indian nation, commemorating Gandhi's commitment to peace, tolerance and understanding. Values that resonate strongly today.

Clutha-Southland Visit

I had a great day with Hamish Walker MP in his Southland electorate this week.

We met with teachers from Fiordland Kindergarten, smart students from Central Southland College and held meetings in Te Anau and Winton. I enjoyed hearing perspectives from rural and provincial NZ and was struck by one farmer’s message: Please don’t put farmers on a pedestal, we don’t want special treatment, we just want fairness. Policies that treat us fairly, that don’t demonise us or pit other New Zealanders against us. We’re hurting right now and we’re worried about where it’s all going.

These are good people who want to do their bit for the environment while continuing to make a living. They deserve fairer treatment than they are getting under Labour.

Skyline Walk

Me and my two eldest children loving the views on the Skyline walkway above Karori last weekend. Aren’t Wellingtonians lucky to have these opportunities so close to our CBD!

Measles in ECE

I spoke with Newshub a few weeks ago about my fight for ECE teachers to receive the measles vaccine as a priority.

I have had lots of early childhood teachers and centres owners contacting me to share their frustration and concern at being unable to get the measles vaccine.

Many have been turned away from medical clinics and others have been left in limbo on waiting lists. Some medical clinics have chosen to vaccinate ECE teachers but others feel they can’t as the Government’s official guidelines do not allow ECE teachers to be prioritised.

This isn’t good enough. Early childhood teachers are risking their own health, the health of their families and of the children they teach because of the Government’s failure to get enough vaccines.
