To celebrate the news Harry Potter will be translated into te reo Māori, we've put together a quiz. How well do you know te reo Māori?

Kia ora John,

Have you heard the news? Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will soon be available in te reo Māori!

This week, Jacinda Ardern announced that Harry Potter (along with Avengers vs X Men and a collection of poems by Maya Angelou) will be translated by the Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust. The trust and Auckland University Press aim to publish 100 books in New Zealand’s indigeneous language over the next five years.

Te reo Māori is a taonga, and part of who we are here in Aotearoa. It’s great that more of us are learning and speaking te reo Māori — and having more resources like Harry Potter in te reo will make it easier for people to learn.

To celebrate te reo Māori, we’ve put together a quiz so you can test your knowledge. Show off your skills or learn something new — then challenge your friends and whānau!

TAKE THE QUIZ

(Then see if your friends can do better!)

Our Government has set a goal of having one million New Zealanders able to speak basic te reo Māori by 2040. We’re investing $33 million over the next four years to support things like more translators, more Māori media content, and initiatives to encourage more young people to use te reo in their everyday lives. We have also launched Te Ahu o Te Reo Māori to strengthen our education workforce to use te reo Māori correctly in our classrooms.

So, how well do you know te reo Māori? Take the quiz and test your skills.

Hei konā mai!
